The man who rides past is King Christian X which is the King of Denmark. Where Is Mrs.Hirch? Mrs.Hisch is the shop keeper of the botton store and she is Jewish so the Nazis shut down her shop.
  • The title of this chapter is "It Will Be a Long Night." Why was it a long night?It was a long night because Ellens parents are gone, but not only that but they would have to pretent that they are sisters and Annemarie has to be so brave to take good care of her.

    1. Why do the soldiers come to the Johansen’s apartment?they expect to find the Rosens but they didn't. The Johansans keept Ellen hidden very good too.

  • 1.For what reason isThey came there because they were hopping to find the Rosens which they hear that they were good friends of them, but the Rossens were not there.
    2. What do you think they expected to find? I think Uncle Henrik’s home a good place to take a Jewish refugee?
    His home is good because he lives so far away not alot of soldiers would expect him to be hidding a jewish refugee.He also lives in a fishing village not far from Sweden.

  • 3. Why are Mama and Annemarie frightened when Kirsti decides to talk to the soldiers on the train? they are frightened because they dont know if she is going to tell if Ellen is jewish or not.
    4. What do you think the soldiers expected Kirsti to say? they expected her to say that she knew someone that was jewish and that was celebrating their new year.

    1. How do Ellen and Annemarie feel as they explore Gilleleje? They feel so happy and free by overlooking the big sea.
    2. Why is this visit different for Annemarie than other times she visited Uncle Henrik? It's different because this time they have to hide Ellen instead of having a fun time doing things they enjoy.
    3. Describe Uncle Henrik and Mama’s relationship. Their relationship is very close and you can see that because of the way they treat each other. They treat each other with respect and dignity and they love each other very much.


Chapter 8
1. What two statements does Uncle Henrik make that worry or puzzle Annemarie? One statement is when herick asked if the weather was good for fishing, but Annemarie knew that he fishes in any weather. Another statement is when Herick said that Annemarie's great aunt Birety died when she was preety sure she didn't have a great aunt Birety.
2. Do you agree with Annemarie that Great-aunt Birte doesn’t exist? Yes I do agree with Annemarie because I think you would now is you had a great aunt by that name.
1. What do you think Uncle Henrik means by “Tomorrow will be a day for fishing”? I think that tomorrow they will have to keep Ellen safe because the soldiers were coming. He really means that tomorrow will be a good day to take Jewish refugees to Sweden on his fishing boat.


Chapter 9
1. Who do you think the ‘mourners” are? I think mourners are townspeople that are friends with Unkle henrick. No, they are the refugees.
2. How does Uncle Hunrik explain to Annemarie why he and Mama lied to her about Great –aunt Birte? Unkle Henrick explains that mama and him lied to her because they thought she would be braver if she didn't know what everthing was going on.

The soldier asked Annemarie, "who died?" and even though she knew it was a lie she answered him and said, my great aunt Biret.

Chapter 10

1. What familiar phrase is in the psalm that Peter reads to the “mourners”? "He who numbers the stars one by one" is familiar because it is the title of the book.
2. How do you think most of the people at Uncle Henrik’s house felt during the wake? I think they felt scared and surprised because they didn't expect any of the soldiers to come in there fake funeral.
3. How does Mama keep the soldier from opening the casket? She said that she died because she had typhus when she died and that there were still some germs in the casket.
4. Reread the psalm and Annemarie’s reaction to the reading of it. What do you think is the significance of the title of this book? I think the significance of this book is when he said "He who numbers the stars on by one" which I think it will be important later on and we will find out what it means.
  • Chapter 11
    1. What is in the casket? Just some blankets and jackets. No body in it.
    2. Why did Peter insist upon giving the baby some medicine? He insisted upon it because if you were to give the baby the medicine it would drug it and wouldn't be able to make any noises or cry.
    3. One possible theme for this novel is that it is easier for people to be brave if they do not know everything. Use an incident that happened in this novel to prove this. One incident is when Heric ?????????

    . Find a section of this chapter that shows Annemarie no longer thinks of herself as the carefree child she once was. Annemarie became more because when the Rosen's and some other jews were leaving the boat Annemarie was brave and stayed quiet because she didn't want to complain or cry.

  • . Do you think Annemarie will meet any soldiers on the way to Uncle Henrik’s boat? No, i don't because Annemarie will try her best to make sure that no one discovers her.
  • What observations about waiting does Annemarie make in this chapter? The observations are when Annemarie finds out that waiting for a loved one can be very hard.
    3. Why does Annemarie worry about her mother’s safety.She worries about her safty because if something happed to her she wouldn't be able to whatch her and Kristi. She is concerned that her mother could be captured by the Nazis.

  • Chapter 13
    1. Why does Annemarie volunteer to take the packet to Uncle Henrik? I think she vounteered because she knew it was imoportant and her mom can't because she has a broken ankle.
    2. Why doesn’t Mama tell Annemarie what is in the basket? She doesn't because she thinks that she will be braver if she doesn't know everything. She also knows that Annemarie will not be able to identify what is in the basket if she doesn't know, so the secret is much more secure.

    1. There is a reference to the story of Little Red Riding Hood in this chapter. Which characters from story are like Red Riding Hood and the wolf? Annemarie is like red ridding hood and the soldiers and dogs are like the wolf.
    2. In this chapter we see that Annemarie is confronted with reality and begins to less of a child. What is the reality she confronts? The reality she confronts is because she is important and has a big responsablity to give her unkel his lunch safely.

    1. What is your reaction to how the soldiers treated Annemarie? I was shocked because at first, well I thought to myself and thought if all these was really real because how could someone treat someone else with that disrespect. I mean she is still just a human bean. Why can't they see that. It's just not fair.
    2. List three times when the German soldiers are rude to Annemarie.One time was when they invaded in their home and accused them for hidding the Rosens. Two was when they yelled at her, and told them to stop for running down the street. Three was when the soldiers took the food out of her basket and gave it to the dogs.
    3. Why does Annemarie act like Kirsti? She acts like Kristi because mama told her to because when you act like a little girl and carless it seems like your innocent.

    2. What secret information does Uncle Henrik share with Annemarie about the Rosens? The secret info was that the Rosens were in the secret compartment when the soldiers were looking on the boat.

    1. This chapter takes place two years later after the war. How do the Danish people include their Jewish neighbors in the celebration? They included their jewish neighbors by hanging flagesof where they used to live.
    2. How did Peter die? How did Lise really die? Perter died by bieng shot when the nazis found out what he was doing and Lise died by having a car run over her.
